Kitchen Help! {THAT MEANS YOU}

THIS is my kitchen. It needs help. Mind you, a couple things have changed since this picture was taken (a couple years ago). However, this gives you the general idea of what we're working with.
At this point, you might already know that Chad and I tiled the kitchen backsplash (full details on that later) and have been working on a few other DIY home improvement projects before putting our house back on the market. So... add a new sink, glass tile backsplash, and black rolldown shades to the photos above and you pretty much have our current kitchen.

Next up on the "do-it(mostly)-yourself" "on-a-dime" kitchen remodel are the following projects:
1. Paint the ceiling/walls.
2. Schedule NW Specialty Paint to come in and paint the cupboards.
3. New kitchen hardware (knobs/pulls/hinges).
4. Window coverings.
5. New flooring.
6. New moulding.

Trust me, I would love to splurge and get myself a fancy new kitchen complete with a new stove, fridge, and even a dishwasher (which upon careful inspection, we do NOT have) - but I cannot build my dream house if I spend all my money on this kitchen! Priorities people! We are hoping to make this kitchen appealing to the masses - neutral enough that anyone can walk in and envision it as their own kitchen.

Now, I know you all have an opinion, and I want to hear it! There are a couple things already set in stone (literally - the tile), but I have to make a couple decisions in the near future and would love some input. See below - the tile backsplash along with some fabric samples and flooring samples. You can also see our kitchen countertops (which we are not replacing at this point) and our red Kitchen Aid mixer :) The tile, flooring, and countertops are all decided so if you don't like them - too bad. We have a lot of red accessories in the kitchen, including our mixer, toaster, plates, etc. so I want our color scheme to coordinate with the red.
Another with the tile and flooring samples...
See the numbers? 1-5. Take your pick. I am leaning toward one of the designs, but I could be swayed.

What am I looking for from you? Tell me this...

1. Which fabric choice speaks to you? Which would you go with based on the flooring, tile, countertop selections? I do not think my window coverings are going to be too elaborate - probably just a ruffle valence covering since we have black shades.

2. What color would you paint the walls/ceiling? I am kind of wanting to do something not-so-neutral here, I think paint is an easy change and with everything else being neutral, a pop of color could be a nice touch. However, I can be convinced otherwise.

3. What color would you paint the cabinets? This - I do want this to be neutral. Painting/refinishing a whole kitchen of cabinets is not an easy job and it is very time consuming - which is why we are paying to have it done professionally. Based on your fabric/wall selections, what neutral would you select for the cabinets?

4. What finish/style would you go with for new cabinet hardware? Mind you, we are on a budget, so nothing crazy is going to happen, but I do live in this house and I want it to be pretty. Black, bronze, pewter, brass, nickel, chrome, iron? What do you think?

Any and all input is appreciated! If you have a specific color of paint you absolutely love, share it with me! Want to design my kitchen for me? Please do! I'd love to hear your suggestions - and if you are feeling the need to paint one of these days, let me know ;) I'll put you to work!

***Sidenote - did you know the kitchen cupboards in this house used to be PINK!? Who does that? The woman who built this house 50+ years ago loved pink. More about our once pink home here, here, and here.

You have no idea how happy it made me feel to see your kitchen--I thought I was the ONLY one living w/ an outdated kitchen from the 50's. My kitchen looks EXACTLY like yours--rounded off kitchen island w/ completely useless shelves and all--no dishwasher here either.

To answer all of your questions:

Regarding paint: Pick a color that inspires you and draws you in--something that will make you want to spend 90% of your day there and wash the dishes for the third time by hand every. single. day. =) Seriously though, pick a color that YOU LOVE!

Personally, I'm a white ceiling kind of gal. Unless the room is very BIG or the ceilings are very high I think they should be white.

As for cabinets--personally, I would pick white or grey--because they are, after all, my two favorite neutrals. =) I think white though, is a more classic choice and if you plan on selling someday, which I'm guessing you are, it might be the better choice. White cabinets are good though as they can accommodate any styling pretty easily. When we redo ours, they will be white. Something more to think about--as it's something we'll do when we refinish our cabinets--buy a very thin(1/4" x 2 1/2" or so) piece of wood and frame each cabinet door before painting. Does that make sense? I don't have pictures but we did it with some of the built ins in our house and the transformation was huge--outdated to modern for a little investment.

As for hardware--that's all you and the feel you want for your kitchen. Mine though, will be brushed nickel mixed w/ glass and/or acrylic--whatever's cheaper. =)

I think the fabric should be the final choice BUT I think my favorite one from your swatches is 2...possibly 4 if I could see more of it but I like the colors that are happening there.

Anywho--thanks for letting me blabber on and on! Can't wait to see it finished! =)

Well..... you asked for it...... and you will get a lot of advice that you will just throw away including mine. So here goes.
1. I really like your back splash and flooring, they are very nice,
good choices, especially for re-sale...
2. I personally think your fabrics are too bold and graphic for a
small kitchen and especially if all you are doing is small valances. Your kitchen is "old fashioned" with the painted cupboards, (remember that's what I have, I know old fashioned). lol
3. You're tile, flooring and counter tops all lean toward the warmer earthy tones and I would buy a medium sized print that is a little softer that would tie in some black and red.
4. There are two places I'd recommend to look for fabric. Caladonia's off River Street and Home Fabrics in Boise, down the strip from Cabela's. The both have special fabrics that are different from Joanne's. I think it would be worth a look see.
5. I wouldn't even think of paint until you decide on fabric and I
would also talk to the painters cause I used a "Dura-poxy" a chip
resistant paint from Ontario Paint and as I recall there are some
color restrictions. Maybe the professionals can do anything.
6. Have you thought of a wall paper on the soffet? Dan said wall paper is coming back. That would sure change the whole valance hing.
You sure have your work cut out for you and Chad but looks like
you are on to a great start. I know you have good taste in your
decorating but you asked for thoughts. Take it or leave it.
See you Sunday
Love Bev

Recycled glass countertops prices will vary depending on the product and its manufacturer. The same is true of granite countertops, whose prices will vary depending to some degree on whether the granite is domestic or mined from a quarry in a foreign country.

I would go with #1 Green Fabric - it would look great with your red accents. I just painted my cabinets in a light grey by Sherwin Williams called Agreeable Gray and it looks beautiful - not stark white but just a hint of grey. You could also keep your walls neutral (buyers prefer this) with another grey on that same swatch like SW Mega Greige.
