September Rewind

September? Yes, I am a wee bit behind, and I have a lot of catching up to do!!

If you know my sister, you probably have heard about the disaster in her classrooms this summer. The paint color that ended up on the trim, cabinets, etc. was horrible so she decided to tackle one of the two rooms over Labor Day Weekend. Willy and I came to help. I know she has a full post planned for this, but just to give you an idea... we went from random orangey/brown/something color to chocolate brown which is oh-so-much better! One classroom down, one to go!
In Chad's world, September means archery season and trust me, there was plenty of that going on. We both had Oregon archery elk tags and one afternoon we went for a hunt - no elk, however, Chad did kill a wiley coyote and a badger with his bow. The badger went back in his hole and we were not risking that he might still be alive - so no pictures there!
Mama Hon turned 72 this year and as usual, my mother and I made a trip out to the cemetery to have a glass of wine with her and Uncle Jimmy. Mom brought the wine - a nice Soft Huckleberry. It's wasn't Mama Hon's typical Carlo or Franzia, however, I think Uncle Jimmy would be pissed if we brought that again :)
This year, I worked pretty hard on trying to get an elk with my bow, but "try" doesn't always cut it, I think you need a little luck too! Chad and I were pretty diligent about practicing this summer to make sure I was comfortable with my bow - which was great because I was much more confident this year! Dad and Greg put up a tree stand for me in a pretty heavily trafficked game area and after the animals got used to it, I started sitting in the stand. Patience, tree stand hunting takes patience... and a good book. The trail cam showed a lot more animals than I ever saw, but I did have a chance to shoot a cow elk and did not take it. After seeing big bulls on the trail cam, I just couldn't bring myself to do it! Dad and I even went out one day looking for a few elk he had been seeing, but no luck!

It was a lot of fun, but exhausting - the drive to the tree stand from my house was about two hours (one way) and that can take a toll - especially when we were just starting our busy season at work! Greg went out with me a couple times, Katia and Gavin even came along - but mostly I was sitting the stand all by my lonesome. And I will tell you, the walk back to the pickup in the dark was a little scary.
I suppose there is always next year! Chad has already asked me what tags I want to put in for for 2012..... I think my response was something like, "Don't I have until May to decide that?!"
